Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital (KUTRRH) and Kenyatta University (KU) have formally signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), establishing a comprehensive framework for integrating KU medical and nursing students into KUTRRH for clinical training.

The agreement marks a significant milestone in strengthening medical education, research, and patient care through a structured and sustainable partnership.

The MoU provides a clear governance architecture to guide the collaboration, outlining roles, responsibilities, and accountability mechanisms for both institutions.

It also sets out detailed terms for clinical education and compliance with key standards, including the Data Protection Act, Non-Disclosure Agreements, Intellectual Property Rights, and harmonized Codes of Conduct for students and staff.

Speaking during the signing, KUTRRH Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Zeinab Gura, reflected on the hospital’s vision of delivering exceptional clinical services while nurturing the next generation of health professionals.

The establishment of a Joint Technical Committee in June 2024, she said, laid the foundation for robust frameworks that now support medical education at the hospital.

Dr. Gura further highlighted that strategic consultations and institutional visits in early 2025 helped solidify readiness for hosting medical student rotations.

KUTRRH Board Chairperson, Mr. James Kibugu Wambu, described the collaboration as a model of how complex institutional challenges can be navigated through clarity, goodwill, and principled leadership.

He praised the consistent engagement between the KU Council and the KUTRRH Board, as well as the professionalism of the Joint Technical Committee, and pledged continued board support to ensure the partnership delivers lasting benefits to students and society.

On his part, Kenyatta University Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Paul K. Wainaina, termed the MoU signing a historic and deeply personal milestone.

With the MoU and supporting policies in place, he expressed confidence that the partnership will advance medical training, research, and healthcare delivery.
