The United Opposition has called for a swift, transparent, and independent investigation into the helicopter crash that claimed the life of Johanna Ngeno, the Member of Parliament for Emurua Dikirr, along with five others.
Speaking on behalf of the coalition, Opposition leader Rigathi Gachagua urged the government to conduct a comprehensive inquiry to establish the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident.
He said the country deserves full disclosure and accountability over what led to the tragedy.
Gachagua further alleged that the late MP had been coerced into signing an impeachment document against him, claiming the move was carried out under pressure from the President. According to Gachagua, Ngeno had faced intimidation and undue duress prior to his death allegations that have heightened political tensions in the aftermath of the crash.
The Opposition leader also demanded that Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen step aside to allow for what he termed a credible and impartial investigation.
Should the government fail to establish an independent probe, Gachagua called for international agencies including Scotland Yard and the Federal Bureau of Investigation to be invited to assist in the investigation to ensure transparency and public confidence.
In a related statement, former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i criticized the government for what he described as taking Kenyans for granted.
He argued that public dissatisfaction with the administration stems from poor governance and a failure to address pressing national concerns.
Matiang’i further accused the government of fostering criminality by allegedly harboring known offenders and failing to decisively tackle insecurity.
The United Opposition reiterated its commitment to what it described as restoring accountability and respect for democratic institutions.
The coalition vowed to usher in a new administration that prioritizes listening to citizens and acting in their best interests.
As investigations into the helicopter crash begin, the tragedy has quickly evolved into a flashpoint in Kenya’s already charged political landscape, with calls for transparency likely to dominate national discourse in the days ahead.
