The Government has reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing security and safeguarding livelihoods along Lake Victoria, citing the lake’s immense economic and strategic importance to the country.
Speaking after a meeting with the management of the Kenya Coast Guard Service (KCGS), Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen underscored the need for a strong Coast Guard presence to protect communities that depend on the lake while countering illegal activities such as smuggling of goods, including narcotics.
The meeting, held with the KCGS leadership led by Director General Mr. Bruno Shosio, focused on reviewing the Service’s work plans and the delivery of its mandate along the Lake Victoria corridor.
“A strong Coast Guard Service presence is therefore critical in safeguarding livelihoods while countering the smuggling of goods, including narcotics,” stated CS Murkomen.
As part of the visit, the delegation inspected ongoing rehabilitation works at the Old Port Coast Guard Station.
The project, which is currently 80 per cent complete, is expected to enhance surveillance and rapid response capabilities once finalized.
To further strengthen patrol operations on Lake Victoria, Kenya Shipyard Limited has rehabilitated three additional boats to support KCGS activities.
The Government also committed to continued support for the Kenya Coast Guard Service through the acquisition of land for permanent facilities around Lake Victoria and the recruitment of additional personnel to meet growing operational demands.
“To strengthen patrol operations around Lake Victoria, Kenya Shipyard Ltd has rehabilitated three additional boats. We will continue supporting KCGS, including by acquiring land for permanent facilities and increasing personnel to meet operational demands,” he added.
The CS reiterated that collaboration with key stakeholders, including Beach Management Units (BMUs), will enhance promoting compliance, information sharing and safety.
The engagement was attended by Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o, Deputy Inspector General of the Administration Police Service Gilbert Masengeli and other senior government officials, reflecting a whole-of-government approach to securing Lake Victoria.
