The United Opposition has called for the immediate commencement of mass voter registration by the end of March 2026 to ensure inclusivity and public confidence in the electoral process.
“An impartial IEBC must not only be spoken about but must be felt by every Kenyan Voter; this, mass voter registration commencing at the end of March 2026 is what must happen,”noted Gachagua.
Speaking after a consultative engagement with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) held on Wednesday afternoon, Opposition leaders expressed grave concerns regarding the conduct of the recently concluded by-elections and the preparedness for the 10th August 2027 General Election.
The leaders cautioned that Kenya’s democracy must never be treated as having taken a retreat or a backseat.
They warned against the capture of independent institutions and their use to advance biased political ends, noting that such actions threaten the sovereignty of the people and the future of the nation.
During the engagement, the Opposition raised alarm over incidents witnessed during the by-elections, including reports of state-sponsored goons and militia taking over polling stations.
“It cannot be, as witnessed in the by-elections, state-sponsored goons and militia take over polling stations, government officers assume roles of electrol injustices, procurement of election materials and equipment rhyme worst election experiences across the world and an insecure election is what can be seen a step ahead,” stated Gachagua.
The concerns, they noted, mirror some of the worst election experiences globally and point to serious risks ahead if left unaddressed.
The Opposition underscored that Kenyans are demanding transparent elections.
“A transparent, free and fair, credible and verifiable election is what Kenyans are demanding and we join them,” added Gachagua.
They further emphasized that the independence and impartiality of the IEBC must not only be declared but must be demonstrably felt by every Kenyan voter.
The consultative meeting was attended by senior leaders of the United Opposition, including Hon. Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka, Hon. Eugene Wamalwa, Hon. Martha Karua, Dr. Fred Matiang’i, Hon. Omingo Magara, Democratic Congress Party Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malala, elected leaders, and party officials.
